Dynamic Page Lists

Ah, finally we have a better solution. At my request, Erig has installed the DPL MediaWiki Extension. I think I have fully evaluated it for our uses, and it appears to work fabulously.

I have already begun to implement it on many of our lists (such as Sword Weapons, Arachnids, Boots, etc.). The idea is to fully convert all of our lists into DPL lists so that they will be automatically maintained as articles are updated, and can be sorted on-the-fly by the user. I have also noticed a slight increase in performance over the template lists we have been using.

Enjoy the new lists, and be sure to give me any feedback you have!

I didn't understand 100% yet how this fully work, I'm reading about it, but it look like a lot of work will be saved. Thanks Whitey, after I understand that 100% I'll try to give you feedback if necessary :)

It looks beautiful! Does this also apply on NPC list pages? Cause then it would probably be easier to implement pictures. Well first upload all NPC pictures.

About the sorting buttons

I really liked those! But I just noticed, that they're on every column, even on the ones that cannot be sorted. Like the creatures images. This might be just a detail, but I'm somehow perfectionist :p. Well, take Dwarvespage as an example, columns that I think should not have sort buttons are: The image (if you click, it don't even sort, it go to the top of the page), Summon/Convince (those 2 can be sorted maybe, but I'm not sure since many creatures are not summonable), Immunities and loot.

I hope this help for now, I'll keep reporting if I see anything else.

About the NPC lists... they're coming, and yes, I'm certain that DPL will work for the NPC lists, too.

About the sort buttons on all columns... I looked a little while into that and didn't see anything, then I changed focus to simplifying the implementation. I'll look more into manually assigning column data types and sorting methods later.

Thanks... I'm glad to be getting some positive feedback.

As always, I'm open to suggestions and ideas. I also think it looks really good. This is not a huge update to the appearance of the pages, but the wiki has been getting a little stale over the past few weeks, and I think this will work well for raising interest a little bit more. I think the part I like most is that these lists are now dynamic, so we don't have to worry about adding some every new item/creature/whatever to 4-5 different articles when the update comes out. It should automatically show up in all the right places.

Is it possible or even necessary to update that blue creature template I made if so how would you do it?

I think they should stay the way they are. They do not change frequently enough to be a large maintenance burden, and I think they look pretty good.

Are you doing all creature lists with that new template function or whatever it would be called? I see you've done some major ones (such as Necromancers, Paralysis, ect.) would you be doing the not-so-important creature lists like Lich Hell, Hero Cave, etc..? It would be somewhat easier to play around with for visitors, but the work put into it might be too much? I don't have a clue as to how to use that template so I won't bother..lol

11:47: Saturday, 15 of August Can these dynamic lists "read" stings of data or do they just print them? If they can actually interpret them then perhaps we could make it so they the loot lists are dynamic aswell - that would tie in with the hunting areas being dynamic aswell, like if it could read the locations found in then it could add it from there etc. Also these dynamic lists could be used in the attacks section - like lists of monsters that use wave area spells and such.

About the creature lists.... that depends. Probably most of them could be easily moved-over, but I'm not sure yet if it would be best for all of them. If we make these DPL lists more complicated, then the format and content of the creature pages becomes more and more important... I think we should kinda ease our way into it, and see how it works for different list types. The lists I'm most concerned about right now are the Immunities lists. I still haven't converted all of them, and I'm trying to work out how is the best way to do them.

About the loot lists question... yes, DPL is a very advanced extension, and it certainly could be used for the loot lists, but I'm not sure yet if it should be used. I'll try and play around with it this week and see if it is worth it, and if it works like we want it.

It's okay. I could tell that you weren't trying to be malicious. It was not a big deal.

Netlios

Maybe you have seen the discusion on Talk:Netlios. If you agree with me, can you delete this page or if you think the information is still required, delete the NPC template so it will be page with just some plain text?

Sorry that it took me so long to respond.

As I said on the Netlios talk page, I think it was very appropriate to change the article as you did.

We can always change it back if something new is discovered.
