Something Funny[]

Maybe it is inappropriate to say this, but after browsing through this newly supported fansite for a bit I can say the two following things. 1) They almost literally copy stuff from tibiawiki, content and templates and translate them. 2) They also copy our mistakes XD

Edit: this is an example from what I mean. An exact copy of: the content and the images from tibiawiki (I took this as an example because I created it a while ago). Maybe nevermind what I'm saying, I'm just a bit shocked/surprised.

I've even seen a few talk pages copied with no modifications whatsoever, so yeah they did 'copy' it, but there's not much we can do AFAIK since it's under a free-use license. -- Sixorish 20:02, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I know. But it still makes me feel a bit unhappy. ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 20:20, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

I just realized this is a supported fansite now .. which makes me somewhat disappointed. I can see it becoming larger and eventually gain the "Promoted" status despite ripping everything from here. Still nothing we can do about it though. -- Sixorish 20:37, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Should we note on this page that we aren't affiliated with them, since some viewers may be confused with the similarities? -- Sixorish 23:31, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

I thought about it, and found something. In the fansite agreement #6 (and I quote) Plagiarism from other fansites cannot be tolerated. If you want to use pictures, tables etc. from another site, please only do so if you have the permission of its owner. Please use your own thoughts on your site.
Maybe we can do something with that. Also, can you give a link to those copied talk pages? ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 06:58, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Talk:Ork Porak (Book), hmm..thought I remember seeing others..
They copied the way we have building lists (page name, "<city name>/Building/House" too -- Sixorish 07:32, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Come to think of it, this isn't even translated in to Portuguese yet, copied word-for-word and even the images are taken, that should be enough to convince them... -- Sixorish 07:36, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I thought the best thing we can do is email to fansites@tibia.com, with a good story with our evidence. But since I emailed them 2 days ago, which had nothing to do with this, about a news ticker of tibiawiki turning 4 years, they said it was ok but they could only rely on emails from the contact person of each fansite, and not all administrators and helpers. Since erig is our contact person, he should email cipsoft about this. I don't know if that's gonna work. ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 11:40, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

See the first version of TibiaWiki article. They have the template The following article needs to be translated. (in Portuguese: O artigo abaixo precisa ser traduzido.) which is used in 47 articles. Strenght of War (administrator of Portal Tibia Wiki) admits that Portal Tibia Wiki is based on TibiaWiki (in Portuguese: Ele serve de base para o Portal Tibia Wiki!).
What are you waiting for leave a message to Erig?

The reason I didn't want to get in this nonsense is because we're using "they stole our content" as a reason for debate -- if you take a look, we have a lot of "thieved" content, the update teaser images, thieved from the fansites which were granted permission to use them, did we have their permission? or did people upload them without asking whether or not they could use them? Most of our "newly discovered items" were found from an un/supported fansite which was then added to the wiki, so we have little self-produced content, we are thieving a fair bit from other sites, as are they, which they could use to counter said debate. -- Sixorish 20:16, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

They are copying our content in English and, after some months, translating it. There are articles not translated, I found one from May 2007. They copy our templates too. They copy TibiWiki ONLY... we copy from several sites. =P

I didn't know we copied from other sites
Art Featherpitch 21:49, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

By "copy" I mean some of the contributors take what they got from forums like WoT, or just take them from cams. Some update teasers are taken from the fansites granted permission, but as far as I know we don't ask any of them nor CIP for permission to use them. -- Sixorish 21:58, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I don't really agree with that. I think we are not copying copyrighted material, and elsewhere I suggest we stop doing it. The update teaser images we took/take from different fansites are not copyrighted by those fansites, they are all from cipsoft, distributed via that media. Those "newly discovered items" are mostly just found in-game or in the sprites by our contributors, not on other fansites (if we are talking about the same thing). Besides that, there is a difference between copying content, information, images and things like those talkpages they copied. You can't just copy someone else's statement, like they did here with e.g. Art's and Six's comment. I think we have good enough arguments, and I will try to compile a letter to cipsoft asap, which I will put here first, so people can help me improve it. ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 22:06, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I think we should explain the situation to Erig and he will know what to do. If someone should contact CipSoft, this someone is Erig.

Guys did something happen about this? I know this for fact is against the fansite agreement and should be dealth with. But the last post was in November and it's March now. There still doesn't seem to be any progress since they still have articles from TibiaWiki set on their translation list. Did Erig contact the CMs? They are after all a second brazilian fansite, and if they want to stay supported they needed to be original not just translate other fansites without their agreement. Kseni Of Chimera

Nothing has been done about this, since the discussion a few months ago, besides that Hunter messaged Erig on his talkpage about it(?). At first I was mad on them, "stealing" our info, but then I didn't really care anymore. I'm not gonna fight a fight which can hardly be won and is in some way useless. I'm not gonna stop anyone from taking action either. ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 07:46, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

I hate to say it, but the fansite agreement does not say it's a requirement for supported ranked ones, only promoted. They do appreciate it, but it doesn't breach any part of the agreement unless they become a promoted fansite. The only part I can see as debate-worthy is this: "Plagiarism from other fansites cannot be tolerated." - but if I remember correctly their "TibiaWiki" article states that the information they have is based on it, which would probably save them even if it's quite hidden/pretty much invisible to the usual browser.
As far as I know, Erig hasn't taken any action against it, and I doubt anyone else has, either. I don't think it would do any harm to inform CIP (or direct them here) for them to take a look, but relying on Erig to do it probably isn't the most promising thing, as can be seen by the lack of a response on the matter.
I would have preferred that the Portal Tibia Wiki guys had worked on the Wikia Portuguese/Spanish version, because then we could have cross-language links, which won't be supported unless Wikia host it. -- Sixorish 07:58, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Well I sent an email about it, directing the Cms to this page and to some pages on Tibiaportal. Not sure if they'll answer me since I'm not contact person, but hopefully they'll share their opinion on this matter. I guess it's worth a try. Hugs, Kseni Of Chimera 08:37, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Erig has already discussed this on the fansite board and came to an agreement with PortalTibia. Quoting the email "As far as I know, this issue was already discussed on the private fansite board and Erig and the admin of PortalTibia came to an agreement. PortalTibia added a note to their Wiki, stating that a major part of the content was taken and translated from Tibia Wiki. ". Kseni Of Chimera 06:46, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

You mean this note on their homepage?
Portal Tibia Note
Then I think this discussion is closed, all is set. ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 06:54, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
