Speed refers to the rate at which a player moves. A player's speed depends on many factors, such as the entity's base speed, any items or effects that entity is using, and the target tile's speed. The actual movement speed of characters, however, can only be one of a few discrete values depending on the Speed Breakpoints it reaches.
Every entity that moves autonomously has a base speed value. Creatures and NPCs have base speed values that are fixed. Player characters have a base speed value that is dependent upon the level of the player.
Certain items, mounts, spells and effects will add or take speed from an entity, which works separate to the base speed value. The base speed value does not change, only the computed speed value.
The current character's speed, as well as the base speed and speed gained or lost by items, mounts, spells and effects can be seen in the Skills Window.
Prior to Update 9.8, players had speed values that were double what they are now. At some point, speed values were stored for each player as well as maximum mana and health, which meant that changes to the system would not be reflected across older characters. This was only an issue for speed in one instance where characters older than the creation of Nova would be slower than other characters by 10 levels. On February 14, 2006, CipSoft made the old characters equal to the new ones.

Optimizing System Settings
Walking with the arrow keys on the keyboard works a lot better after increasing the repeat rate and reducing the repeat delay of keystrokes. In MS Windows this can be changed in Control Panel → Keyboard.

Spells and Charms
- Note: A character's modifiable speed value is equal to its base speed — which does not consider equipment and mount speed boosts — less 40.
- Haste (Utani Hur) raises someone's speed by 30% for 30 seconds.
- Strong Haste (Utani Gran Hur) raises druid's or sorcerer's speed by 70% for 20 seconds.
- Charge (Utani Tempo Hur) raises a knight's speed by 90% for 5 seconds.
- Swift Foot (Utamo Tempo San) raises a paladin's speed by 80% for 10 seconds, however, he/she won't be able to attack or cast any attack spells during that time.
- Adrenaline Burst raises someone's speed by 150% (multiplies it by 2.5) for 10 seconds. As any other defensive charm, there is a 10% chance of it being activated when taking damage from the selected creature.
Mounts
Mounts provide a passive, 10-level boost to speed.
