Some of Hector's students were undertaking experiments related to geological studies, exploring the deeper recesses of this world. Rabid wolves mangled the students furthest into the cave, when the others started to run towards the entrance. In the end only Hector made it as he was the slowest of all and not very far into the hole.

Method:
Talk to NPC Hector the Mentor in the Thais penisula area (here) and take the mission he is offering you.
After taking the mission head down the Rabid Wolf Cave.
Kill 20 x Rabid Wolf and head back to Hector The Mentor. [This step might be optional]
After reporting your mission head back into the cave to fight the cause of the rabid disease.
You will encounter one Rabid Wolf.
You will encounter two Cave Rats.
You will encounter many Cave Rats and many Rabid Wolf. Opening the chest marked with X will reward you 2x Small Health Potion.
You will encounter many Rabid Wolf. If the gate around X is open you also might encounter up to two Ragged Rabid Wolf.
After crossing the quest door you will encounter the mini boss Trollwut. Fight him with all your power! (Note: Killing him while standing inside the quest door will not count and you will have to kill him again.)
After killing Trollwut head to the north and enter the quest gate. Use the corpse (red circle) to obtain a Maddening Mushroom (Quest Item).
To obtain your vocation bound reward enter the corresponding quest gate:
Blue – Knight: Protection Amulet
Purple – Paladin: 25 x Poison Arrow and 25 x Burst Arrow
Orange – Sorcerer: 10 x Fire Field Rune, 10 x Energy Field Rune and 10 x Poison Field Rune
Green – Druid: 10 x Intense Healing Rune, 10 x Cure Poison Rune and 10 x Destroy Field Rune
To complete the Quest report back to Hector The Mentor. He will ask you to bring the Maddening Mushroom to Benjamin in Thais depot (here) so he can send it to the Academy in Edron for further investigations.
