Mitigation is a defensive property that all characters and monsters have. This mechanic reduces all damage of the common damage types (Physical, Earth, Ice, Fire, Energy, Holy and Death) by a percentage.

The base Mitigation of a character or monster is calculated based on several different factors:
- The character (or monster's) Shielding skill;
- Some of the equipment used:
- The Defense (def) of the Shield or Spellbook used;
- The Defense of the weapon only when using two-handed weapons or one-handed weapons without a Shield or Spellbook;
- The type of weapon (one-handed or two-handed weapon). A two-handed weapon will provide a smaller mitigation than a shield with the same defense value;
- The combat stance (offensive, balanced or defensive);
