Legend

A terrible curse transforms the inhabitants of a small island north-east of Edron into dangerous were-creatures on every full moon. Can you help them or succumb to their horrible fate?

Reward

History

This quest was expanded with the Winter Update 2017, when The Curse Spreads missions and related caves were implemented. On the Summer Update 2020, the An Ancient Feud mission was implemented. The Paradise Lost missions were further added in the Summer Update 2023.

Requirements[]

Overview[]

This quest has 3 separate missions which are independent from each other. The Curse of the Full Moon can only be done during full moon nights which happen from the Server Save of the 12th to the server save of the 15th of each month, when the Grimvale Mini World Change is active.

The other missions, The Curse Spreads and An Ancient Feud, can be started at any time even if you haven't started or completed The Curse of the Full Moon yet.

The Curse of the Full Moon[]

This mission starts at Grimvale and its reward is gaining access to Feroxa's lair, which will open on the 13th of every month. To reach Grimvale, travel to Edron and walk to Stonehome. To the north of Stonehome is a ferry run by Cornell. Ask him for a passage to Grimvale.

Grimvale is an island under quarantine because it contains were-sickness. Humans who exhibit the were-sickness are forbidden to leave the island, although this quarantine is not very effective because the were-sickness is not restricted to Grimvale. Werebeasts must seek Purple Nightshade Blossoms within Grimvale to have a hope of curing their illness. If you are bitten by a werebeast you will eventually change into one of them, depending on which beast you were bitten by. You cannot leave the island except by dying or teleporting. NPCs on the mainland will not react to your condition except Cornell at Edron who will suggest you go to Grimvale to find a cure.

Warning: Because you cannot leave as a werebeast, it's not recommended to come here unless you are well prepared. To cure yourself you can either wait for a day that doesn't experience full moons, or eat Purple Nightshade Blossoms which can be found on the 2nd floor of the dungeon.

Purple Nightshade Blossoms[]

The were-sickness is curable by eating Purple Nightshade Blossoms Purple Nightshade Blossoms. These flowers are found exclusively in the Grimvale dungeon. To obtain Purple Nightshade Blossoms, go into the Grimvale dungeon by falling down the Pitfall at the north-east of the island. In this dungeon, there are 3 Blooming Purple Nightshades to harvest from:

  • From the start, head south and follow the cave south-east, where in the next room you will find the first flower (here).
  • Head west to the end of the cave and drop down the pitfall to the next floor. Walk north to find the second flower (here).
  • Head east and follow the path south-east to find the third flower (here).

When you harvest Purple Nightshade Blossoms you will receive the message:

You pick the large blooming blossom from the stem of this purple nightshade.

However, you can only harvest these during full moons because when it is not a full moon, you will see Purple Nightshades in place of the Blooming Purple Nightshades. Attempting to harvest a non-blooming Purple Nightshade will display a server message:

This purple nightshade is currently not blooming. No blossoms can be harvested.

Note that there's a 30-minute cooldown per location to harvest new nightshades, however you will only need blossoms during full moons because the symptoms of were-sickness are only exhibited during these days. That is, if you cannot harvest blossoms because of the world state, the NPCs will react as if you aren't sick.

After harvesting Purple Nightshade Blossoms three times, deliver them to Maeryn by saying nightshade.

Killing Were-creatures[]

In order to enter Feroxa's lair, you will also need to help the citizen of Grimvale by killing 50 were-creatures. The number of creatures you have killed will be registered in your Quest Log in case you need to check.

Obtaining the Liquid Silver Trap[]

Before going to Feroxa's room when its raid starts, you should also prepare some Closed Silvered Traps Closed Silvered Trap, which are necessary for the fight against the boss. A total of 20 traps will be needed for the fight (not for each player, but for the whole server). Usually, every players bring a few traps to help, since creating them can be very time consuming.

To obtain the traps, you will need to bring Maeryn a Closed Trap Closed Trap and Vial of Liquid Silver Vial of Liquid Silver. You can buy the Closed Trap at general equipment stores, even from Gladys at Grimvale, for 280 gold. Obtaining Vial of Liquid Silver is a bit more difficult. Go into the Grimvale dungeon, third floor, and use a Pick (Secret Agent tools will also work) on any Silver Vein in the mountain walls. You may not be able to obtain Vial of Liquid Silver at every try, in which case you will receive the message:

Even after a thorough and frustrating search you could not find enough liquified silver in this vein to fill a flask.

This does not mean that particular vein is empty - you could repeat the process and succeed. When you have attempted to mine a vein, you will be unable to try again for 2 minutes. Mining again before this period is up will result in the following message:

You are still exhausted from earlier attempts. Getting liquid silver out of the mountain needs concentration and a steady hand.

When you are successful you will see the following message and obtain a Vial of Liquid Silver that lasts for 24 hours.

Carefully you gather some of the liquified silver from this vein in a small flask. You now feel strangely affected to the moon.

Each time you successfully mine Vial of Liquid Silver, you gain a permission to use either blue or green glowing marks for various effects:

Green Strange Glowing Mark:

The mythic fires beneath your feet heal you.
Character is healed by 250 Hit Points.

Blue Strangely Glowing Mark:

The mythic fires beneath your feet strengthen you.
Character's speed is boosted by 90 for about 1 minute.

If it's not a full moon, you will be unable to mine the Silver Vein:

Only in the light of the full moon, these strange veins of unique silver will liquify and be soft enough to be mined.

Mining liquid silver, 60 trials.

Note: You will complete the mission by entering Feroxa's lair once the raid begins, even if you don't fight it.

Feroxa[]

After having delivered 3 Purple Nightshade Blossoms and killed 50 were-creatures, you will have access to Feroxa's lair. The lair will open when the raid starts on the 13th of every month, and it can start at any time between the Server Save and 12 hours after it.

At her first human stage you need to fight her with normal attacks, both spell and physical. When you reduce her health to about half, she will transform into her werewolf form.

In this second phase she is immune to almost everything except for Silvered Traps and Life Drain damage. When Feroxa walks on these traps, she will be damaged for 1,000 health points and the traps will vanish. The traps can be stacked and she does not heal, so it's a matter of having enough traps to bring the boss to half health. As an alternative, sorcerers and druids can summon either Gozzlers or Ghouls to deal Life Drain damage, but this process takes a lot longer.

At half health, she will change into her killable werewolf form. Now you must attack her with all your firepower.

When she reaches 0 health she will either turn into her weak human form or her gloom wolf form, both of which are quite weak and must be taken down with sheer firepower.

You will receive two sets of loot for the whole battle. Only the final form of Feroxa (Gloom Wolf) will grant you a kill count in the Bosstiary.

The Curse Spreads[]

Edron[]

Talk to Daniel Steelsoul inside the Edron Castle and ask him about the curse. He will explain how they have been able to cure some of the sick citizens of Edron, but not all of them, and they are not sure why, but someone at the Noodles Academy of Modern Magic must know. Go to the Ivory Towers and talk to Milos at the upper floors of the north-west tower and ask him if he knows anything about the curse.

Milos will say that he has made written some notes about this disease and that you should find them. There are 4 notes:

Grimvale Nightshade Parchment

After getting all 4 notes, go back to Milos and say notes. He will give you a Stone Tablet with Ley Lines and Crimson Nightshade Blossoms and instruct you to use his notes to obtain the other ingredients, which are Shadow Bite Berries, Gold Dust and Silver Dust.

Grimvale Tuft of Shadow Bite

The Shadow Bite Berries can be harvested from Shadow Bite Plants, growing in the dungeon located south-west of Edron, here (you have to enter the Sewer Grate inside the Edron Flats building to cross to the other side). Inside this cave you will meet all types of were-creatures. Go down to the second floor, there will be a Shadow Bite Plant just next to the rope spot. Alternatively, there is a Shadow Bite Plant also on the second floor of Edron Earth Elemental Cave, here.

To obtain the metals, you'll need to visit the Venore Corym Cave, here. After entering the cave, go down the hole north-east, down the next hole, south and down again, then go to the north-west side of the cave and enter the teleport here. Just north of you there will be some mined Gold Nuggets and Silver Nuggets ready to be shipped away, however, you shouldn't steal the Corym Ratter's belongings right in front of him, so you will have to find some inside the mine. If you haven't done so yet. talk to the NPC to start the Hidden Threats Quest and obtain access to the interior of the Corym Mines. You can find Gold Nuggets on the room south-east of the entrance, here. Use your pick on the nuggets to mine them. To mine the Silver Nuggets, you'll have to go down the stairs north to the flower floor (talk to Corym Servant if you don't have access yet). You'll find the Silver Nuggets in a room south-west, here.

After getting the nuggets, go back to Edron. Two floors below Milos you will find a Wooden Grinder. Use the nuggets on the grinder to obtain Gold Dust and Silver Dust.

With all ingredients in hand, you are ready to prepare the cure for the were-sickness. You'll need an Alchemical Apparatus, there are multiple in Sinclair's lab on the central tower, use the one in the north of the room. Use the Crimson Nightshade Blossoms first, followed by the Silver Dust, the Gold Dust and finally the Shadow Bite Berries on it to create your Nightshade Distillate. Deliver the potion to Daniel Steelsoul so he can start using it on Edron's citizens.

Cormaya[]

The were-sickness has also reached Cormaya, and Daniel Steelsoul wants you to help Yoem with it. Travel to the small island and talk to him at the center of the village about the curse. Yoem suspects that the village's water supply is being tainted, and will ask you to investigate the Last Sanctum however, to access it, you must perform a ritual in the Grimvale dungeon first. Go back to Edron, find Cornell north of Stonehome here and ask him for passage to Grimvale.

Grimvale Puzzle Configuration

This puzzle configuration seems to have some meaning. If any levers are pulled at this configuration, a *click* will be heard.

Go down here, and down twice more to the fourth floor, you'll be in the ruins where you must solve the 5x5 puzzle in the center room, here. Pull each lever to move the white tile south of it and create a V-shape starting at the top, as pictured. After that, pull any other lever. You will hear a *click* noise, at which point an array of light will shoot downward from the roof and the white tiles will return to the top.

Now you can enter the Last Sanctum, which is behind a Mystic Flame in a dungeon east of the village in Cormaya, here. It is also inhabited by were-sick creatures. Follow the cave to the south-west and go down the ramp. Go to the room to the north, where you'll find some Statues. When approaching the water, you'll receive a message about how the water is being tainted by the magical statues that were built there. Report this to Yoem (say curse), he will instruct to seek the help of the wizards from Edron. Again, find Milos and tell him about your discoveries.

The clean water changes as soon as it flows into the basin. Obviously this is the spot where Cormaya's water gets tainted.

Milos will explain to you his theory that the cure is not working because the were-creatures have tampered the Ley Lines that meet under Cormaya. In order to fix this, you must remove the curse that has been applied to them by using a Golden Symbol of Suon on the other end of the Ley Line, which is marked by a Dark Stone Totem. There are three Ley Lines: one towards Krailos, one towards Banuta and one towards Vengoth. This is indicated by the text written on the statues inside the Last Sanctum.

Grimvale Dark Stone Totem

Removing the curse from Banuta's Ley Line

You should receive this message after using the Suon Symbol next to a totem:

You remove the curse that was put on this statue.
Grimvale Last Sanctum Clean

After removing the curse from all 3 totems, go back to the Last Sanctum. You'll notice that now the Water is clean again. Report this discovery to Yoem, who will be pleased with your help and instruct you to talk to Daniel Steelsoul once again.

The water that flows into the basin stays fresh and clean now. Obviously the curse is lifted.

Were-beasts leaders[]

Daniel Steelsoul will explain to you that some were-beast leaders have been found to be responsible for spreading the disease, and he needs your help killing them. You'll find them behind magical gates located in Edron's and Cormaya's dungeons.

These bosses must be fought alone, but they are relatively easy. Mages and Paladins can use Fire Wall Runes to keep a distance.

After killing all 5 bosses, report back to Daniel Steelsoul. In gratitude for your help, he will gift you with a Foxtail Amulet. From now on you will also be allowed to travel between the Last Sanctum and Edron's dungeon using the Death Portals existing in both caves (here and here), which can be very useful for going back to the mini-bosses (you can fight them every 20 hours).

An Ancient Feud[]

Grimvale_Quest_-_An_Ancient_Feud

Grimvale Quest - An Ancient Feud

Talk to Daniel Steelsoul in Edron again to learn about the new developments regarding the were sickness. Ask him about the curse and about lion. He will instruct you to talk to Domizian in Darashia, on the first floor of the building just west of the boat (here).

Investigate the Hyaena Lairs[]

Note: Later during the quest you will have to kill a sum of 300 Werehyaenas and Werehyaena Shamans, so it may be a good idea to kill them while doing the first missions instead of simply running around.

You can use the map below to navigate this area during the missions (click to enlarge).

Ask Domizian about the curse and he will request that you investigate the Hyaena Lairs and find out more about the Werehyaenas. The entrance to the lair is just north of the city, on the location shown to the right.

First, you have to investigate three locations.

Grimvale Quest - An Ancient Feud Map 1
  1. Go to the third floor. Go south, where you'll find another hole down to the fourth floor.
  2. Pool of Blood: Go south again, then west, where you'll find the large pool. Make sure to walk near it so you receive a message on your screen.
  3. Skulls on a Stonepile: Go east until you find it. Again, walk near it to receive a message.
  4. Blood-stained Pagoda: Go up using the rope spot between the first two locations and walk north and then east. Here you should also receive a message.

Return to the fourth floor, and go south where you'll find the NPC A Skull. Note that you can only talk with A Skull, if it's night in Tibia - otherwise it will not reply to you. Ask it about the undead and who is their leader.

Report back to Domizian in Darashia about the undead and then go back to the Hyaena Lairs.

Help Rhargu[]

Follow the path south and go down the hole where you'll find Rhargu. Ask him about the curse. In order to help you, Rhargu will ask for some food.

  1. One Haunch of Boar Haunch of Boar which you can loot from Boars.
  2. One Hard-Boiled Hydra Egg Hard-Boiled Hydra Egg. Use a regular Hydra Egg on the campfire located in the Hyaena Lairs, here.
  3. Five Lion's Mane Lion's Manes. If you don't have them already, you can get 5 from the Stump Stump on top of the entrance to Lion's Rock, here.
  4. Five Salted Cave Rat Salted Cave Rats, for which Rhargu will give you an Empty Cask Empty Cask.
    1. Leave the Hyaena Lairs, and when back in Darashia buy a Net (Fishing) Net from Halif and five Salt Salt from Mugluf, at the central market.
    2. Use the Net on Cave Rats to capture them. Mages can summon and capture those, but if you aren't a mage, just go to a place with many Cave Rats such as Thais' sewers. There's a 20% chance that you'll get a Cave Rat (Item). Use Salt on it to get a Salted Cave Rat. Use it on the Cask to store it there. Once the cask is full with 5 Salted Cave Rats, return to Rhargu.

Ask Rhargu again about the curse and deliver the items. You will receive a Lit Torch (Quest) Lit Torch (Quest) to continue the quest and a Cask (Goblin Zombie, Active) Cask (Goblin Zombie) as a reward. (If you lose the torch, say lost torch to Rhargu.)

Destroy the evil site[]

Return to the Skulls on a Stonepile spot and use the Lit Torch (Quest) on it. Your attempt to burn will fail, however. Return to Domizian in Darashia and ask for his help to destroy the connection between the undead and the Werehyaenas. He will instruct you to enter the Lion Sanctum and perform a ritual on the torch.

Go to Lion's Rock north-west of Darashia. Before entering the cave, go on the ramp above its entrance and get a Lion's Mane Flower Lion's Mane Flower from the ones lying on the floor. Use the map below to reach the Lion Sanctum.

Grimvale Quest - An Ancient Feud Map 2

Inside Lion's Rock, go to the third floor until you find the stairs that lead into the Lion Sanctum. Go down there and to the room south-west of the stairs where there's mosaic floor, shown to the right. Use one of the Secret Agent Tools, a Kitchen Knife, a Cleaver, a Small Axe or an Obsidian Knife on the Lion's Mane Flower to obtain Chopped Lion Mane Petals Chopped Lion Mane Petals. While standing on the north-eastern mosaic tile, use the Petals on the Lit Torch (Quest) and you'll get a Lit Torch (Sparkling) Lit Torch (Sparkling). (If you don't stand on the correct tile, you'll get a message saying you're in the wrong place, your torch still won't sparkle, and you'll lose the chopped petals.)

With the blessed Torch, return to the Skulls on a Stonepile in the Hyaena Lairs. Use the torch on it to finally break their connection with the undead. Report your success to Domizian by telling him about the curse.

Kill Werehyaenas[]

Domizian now wants you to kill a total of 300 Werehyaenas and Werehyaena Shamans. Those you have killed so far will already be considered for this mission, so you may have already finished it. If not, return to the lair and kill them, you can follow your progress in your Quest Log. Talk to Domizian again after completing the task.

Get pardon for Domizian[]

Your final task will be to assist Domizian in being pardoned by the Werelions leader, Heliodor. Domizian will give you a Lion Ring Lion Ring which will allow you to access the second level of the Lion Sanctum. Return to the Sanctum and use the Lion Column Lion Column on the south-west corner while wearing the Lion Ring to access the lower floor.

Grimvale Quest - An Ancient Feud Map 3

Before meeting with Heliodor, you'll have to defeat 4 beasts to prove yourself worthy of talking to the Lion King. First, go to the south-eastern side of the Sanctum where you'll find a Slighlty Feline Statue Slightly Feline Statue and use it. Now, go to the central room and you should be allowed through the door. Inside it there are 4 special tiles that work as teleports to each boss.

The bosses aren't much stronger than the Werelions and are similar to the Werebosses of The Curse Spreads mission. Each boss will drop the unique items above that you must take to proceed.

With each beast's item, return to the Slightly Feline Statue and use it again. The items will disappear and you'll be granted access to Heliodor. Walk over the mosaic by the statue to enter his room. When inside, tell him about the curse. You will receive the Drama in Darama Achievement.

Return to Darashia and talk to Domizian once more. You will receive Lion Mosaic (Head) and Lion Mosaic (Mane). You will also be allowed to use the two shortcuts to the Lion Sanctum:

Paradise Lost[]

As the curse continues to spread, it goes further south towards Ankrahmun and Tiquanda. Once again, help is needed in order to fight the were-sickness.

Access to Oskayaat[]

Go to Darashia and meet with Domizian again. Ask him for a mission and he'll tell you Darashia is not the only area affected by the were sickness and that you should talk to a ferryman named Tonar to learn about Oskayaat.

Find Tonar in Ankrahmun (here) and ask him for a passage to Oskayaat. He will then tell you that his ocarina had been stolen and that he would sail you to Oskayaat if you return it to him. He mentions that the thieves are wandering robbers who set up camp somewhere north of Ankrahmun and hide their stolen treasures in underground caves.

Head to Mother of Scarabs Lair (here), go down two floors and you'll find the Ocarina Ocarina when using a sarcophagus a bit north in that floor (here).

Talk to Tonar again and he'll sail to Oskayaat this time.

Mosaics[]

Mosaic

At this point you don't know much about the island and your quest log suggests you to explore it. By doing so you'll find a cave with Werepanthers, Werecrocodiles and Feral Werecrocodiles (here) and another one with Weretigers, Cunning Werepanthers and White Weretigers (here).

When exploring the latter one you'll find a purple Fog Portal which you can't enter yet. In order to do so you need to find and step on 6 mosaics in the two previously mentioned caves. There's one mosaic in the Werecrocodile cave (here) and all other five in the Weretiger cave. You can find them below:

*click* It seems that you have activated some kind of mechanism by stepping onto the floor mosaic here.

After walking over every mosaic you'll be granted access to the Fog Portal to get to the next area.

Moon Symbols[]

Going through the portal will lead you to a new floor with a denser amount of werecreatures. Your goal here is to use moon symbols to be granted access to an area northeast blocked by a wall.

There are five symbols and they must be used in the following order:

Grimvale Quest - Moon Symbol

When using the correct symbol you'll get the following message:

The moon symbol clicks into place.

And then after using the final symbol:

The moon symbol clicks into place. You hear another mechanism activating in the sealed room behind you.

Once you click all symbols you can go northeast and use the wall (marked with a flag in the map above) to access the room and meet Niral.

Ask Niral for mission and he'll tell you he is one of the rare few who have managed to maintain some control over the curse and holds back the animalistic impulses. He then asks you to help controlling the curse and save him and others from that horrible fate. Additionally, he comments he has heard stories about werelions in Darashia who can actually control the curse and that asking them could be a good idea.

Ancient Ritual[]

Meet Domizian again and ask him about the curse. You learn from him that only those who have strong will and a good heart can control the curse through the use of a complex ancient ritual involving the conjuration and activation of secret moon runes, the playing of two holy instruments and the sacrifice of a creature touched by the curse.

For the runes he tells you the aspects of the moon and of the sun should be reconcilied thus the words "SUN AND MOON" should be written with the runes and that king Heliodor should know more about them. For the instruments they shouldn't be mere musical instruments but rather items of great significance: an ocarina made from a scarab shell and a horn made from a conch shell. As for the sacrifice, a were creature that has not yet harmed or even killed someone has to have its life taken for a greater good.

Runes[]

Note: Although the instruments part of the ritual is the last one, it can get started beforehand in order to optimise your time invested in the quest otherwise you will have some downtime waiting one of the instruments to get done.
Grimvale Quest - Scrolls

Head to the Lion Sanctum and meet with Heliodor, here. Ask him about runes and he will tell you to take Heliodor's Scrolls Heliodor's Scrolls from a chest just north in the room that explains the sacred runes.

Go back to Oskayaat and talk once again with Niral asking for mission, and he will read the scriptures. He tells you then to go back to the surface at night and activate the runes in the correct order to form the words "SUN AND MOON". The order must be followed as below:

In case a rune is activated out of order you must restart from the first one.

Sacrifice[]

For the sacrifice, instead of a person a simple specimen of Oskayaat's flora will be enough. You will need a regular Lit Torch Lit Torch that can be acquired from regular tools shopkeepers. Go to the island during nighttime and use a special tool or a kitchen knife to cut a Dewberry Palm Leaf Dewberry Palm Leaf from any of the blue palm trees.

Go to the stone shrine next to the island's boat, where you previously stepped on the runes, and use the Leaf on the Torch to complete the sacrifice. Note that you will also have to do this at night.

Instruments[]

As you learned from Domizian, two instruments are needed for the ancient ritual. They are:

  • Scarab Ocarina Scarab Ocarina: you can obtain this instrument with Tonar (here). Ask him about scarab ocarina and he'll tell you he can make you one with an intact scarab shell that is not smudgy, so kill a Scarab, put its corpse in your backpack and deliver it to Tonar. For this to work there are some things to keep in mind:
    • You will also have to loot the corpse or remove any loot from it in order to be able to pick it up.
    • Since Tonar requests the Scarab to not be slimy, you need to wait 5 minutes for it to decompose from the first stage.
After handing him the corpse you will have to wait 15 minutes to get the instrument.
Use the mouthpiece on the shell to assemble the instrument.

With both instruments in hand, use them while standing in front of the sandy stone shrine (here) during the night.

Curse Under Control[]

Return to Niral and inform her of your mission's completion by greeting her and saying mission. Niral will express gratitude and request that you return the next day. On your return, she will provide a status update.

Once 20 hours have passed, you will be able to speak to Niral about the status of the curse and she'll inform you the curse is under control. As a token of appreciation for your efforts, Niral will grant you the following rewards:

Foxmouse (Mount)
  • Toy Ball Toy Ball: a special item that can be used to tame a Foxmouse. Taming the foxmouse will also grant you the Like Fox and Mouse achievement. Note that the foxmouse can sense the curse, even outside of full moon cycles. Cursed characters can not tame it, and should consume Purple Nightshade Blossoms to get rid of the curse before trying.
  • Access to locked doors: In addition, Niral will bestow upon you the ability to access the previously locked doors within the city of Oskayaat. This privilege allows players to have access to NPCs on the island as well as training statues.

Continuation[]

There are still some mysteries revolving parts of this quest. This section will contain information that may be relevant to solving the quest.

  • In the ruins of Grimvale, there are 5 unbroken (but breakable) Wall Mirrors that can be broken with a Crowbar or any melee weapon (note: only east-facing mirrors can be broken, those facing south cannot).
  • On the third floor there are a lot of Strangely Glowing Marks (Blue and Green). These are not found anywhere else so it's possible that they have some meaning to the quest.
  • The books supposed to give hints are found on Grimvale and contain the following information:

The Moonshadow Temple

If some old legends are true, many centuries ago a big temple was built underneath the island of Grimvale. A spacious subterranean building, whose purpose is unknown nowadays. It was incidentally rediscovered a few years back when one of the village children got lost in the tunnels underneath the island, and found the temple ruins. We made some inquiries in the libraries of Edron, Thais and Carlin and found out the following: once this site bore the Name "Moonshadow Temple". It served as a place where, through crevices and by wisely arranged mirrors, the full moon's rays were conducted deep into earth's interior. Whether they served magical or cultic purposes down there or whether the full moon itself was an object of worship, is no longer known. Built of black granite and partly of white marble, the temple is of considerable size. Lately, since the were-sickness plagues Grimvale, the were-creatures have withdrawn to the tunnels and constantly descend down to the old ruins. At the times of the full moon they come up to the surface to haunt men; but more often they dwell inside the old temple ruins. Whether their interest in this site arises from its connection with the full moon or has different reasons remains a secret for now.

About Were-Transformation

Scholars call it the were-sickness or the Curse of the Full Moon - but whether it is a disease or a curse is still unclear. Some claim it is similar to a contagious malady; others take the view that it is a curse in the classical magical sense. But about one question, the sages are in agreement: the taint is caused by a bite or a scratch of a were-creature. Were-creatures are humans who transform into savage beasts, mainly at times of the full moon. These humans assume the forms of wolves, for example, and may look like common wolves or like a cross between wolf and man. As long as the moon is not full, they seem to be normal humans, and act in a completely ordinary way. But in the light of the full moon, they show their true face. At an advanced stage however, the transformation may take place at other times as well. There are also other forms that afflicted humans assume: bears, boars, foxes, badgers or weasels, depending on an area's wildlife. There are even tales that in other parts of this world, humans assume the forms of local carnivores there, such as lions, tigers, panthers or even crocodiles. Besides humans, elves, dwarves and orcs can also be affected by the were-transformation. So, in short, the following traits are typical of the were-transformation:

1. The transformation into a wild, at least partly carnivorous, animal. The person assumes either a common animal's form or appears as a cross between animal and man.
2. The transformation is caused by a were-creature's bite or scratch.
3. The first transformation takes place at the time of the full moon. During the transformation, the affected have no control over themselves and turn into ferocious beasts. In this stage, they attack even their own relatives, though no other were-creatures. However, espacially strong-willed individuals may resist this gruesome urge at first.
4. If persons are affected by the sickness or curse for a longer time, they are able to transform themselves beyond the times of the full moon.
5. In the early stage, the were-transformation is curable and reversible by a very rare plant, the purple nightshade. It is said that it blossoms only at full moon in subterranean tunnels where the moon rays are falling through fissures in the surface.

6. To weaken a powerful were-creature, silvered traps are very useful. Liquid silver is needed to create such a trap, but this rare metal may only be found underground and at full moon.

The Curse of the Full Moon[]

Player: hi
Maeryn: Greetings, visitor. I wonder what may lead you to this {dangerous} place.
Player: quest
Maeryn: It causes me great anxiety that the curse has {spread} and reached other regions of our world. The most serious problem here on Grimvale is, that many villagers were bitten by were-creatures. ...
Maeryn: Until the next full moon they will turn into savage {beasts}. There is only one way to prevent this: we need enough purple nightshade blossoms. ...
Maeryn: Three of these blossoms should suffice to heal some afflicted persons. But if you bring more I'd be grateful, of course. Would you do that?
Player: yes
Maeryn: Thank you! These plants are reported to grow in the tunnels underneath the village, but I don't know the proper location.

Grimvale Quest

Delivering 3x Purple Nightshade Blossoms:

Player: nightshade
Maeryn: You brought some purple nightshade! Thank you. Now we may heal some affected villagers! You have rendered us a great favour, but if you find any more blossoms, don't hesitate to bring them to me.

Grimvale Quest

Exchanging a Closed Trap and a Vial of Liquid Silver for a Closed Silvered Trap:

Player: trap
Maeryn: You've got a trap and some liquid silver? Great! I know something about silvering wolf traps. May I help you?
Player: yes
Maeryn: Well then, give me the trap and the silver. - Thank you. Now wait just a moment. This won't take too long.

The Curse Spreads[]

Edron[]

Player: hi
Daniel Steelsoul: Greetings and Banor be with you, Player!
Player: curse
Daniel Steelsoul: Yes, recently we have a major problem here on Edron. Strange proceedings are troubling me as well as the common citizens. With each full moon, monsters are roaming the woods - monsters that we only knew from tales until now. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: They look like badgers and foxes who are transforming into humans. Unfortunately, it's the other way round: Peaceful citizens transform into feral beasts as soon as the moon is full. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: Some hunters even claim that they have spotted monstrous humanoid boars, wolves and bears. I know what is going on on Grimvale so I sent a messenger to Maeryn. She confirmed what I already feared: Those creatures are were-beasts. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: The so-called Curse of the Full Moon is spreading and reached Edron. I asked Maeryn for help but she has plenty of trouble on Grimvale and can't leave the island. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: Do you know something about this curse and - even more important - would you be willing to help us?
Player: yes
Daniel Steelsoul: I'm very relieved to hear that. The most important thing right now is to cure the curse of as many affected people as possible. Maeryn already told me that the purple nightshade is able to revert the effects of lycanthropy. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: We tried this but it worked only partially. Strangely, we were able to cure the people living outside the town in the more rural parts of Edron. But there are also some affected people in the town itself and the nightshade doesn't have any effect. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: I'm neither a sage nor a magician. But I'm the one who is supposed to find a solution for this problem. Please pay a visit to the Magic Academy of Edron. Perhaps one of the mages there can help you.

Grimvale Quest

Player: hi
Milos: Oh hello. I hardly noticed you. I'm afraid I am a bit distracted at the moment.
Player: curse
Milos: I heard about this problem. It is, indeed, very strange that only the people who live inside the town cannot be healed by purple nightshade blossoms. But I have a theory: I have done some research on ley lines. ...
Milos: You could call them ancient, straight 'paths' in the landscape which have spiritual and arcane significance. This means, on a ley line spells could be enhanced or weakened, potions or artefacts might work differently than expected. ...
Milos: One of those ley lines is crossing the town of Edron and I heavily suppose that this is the reason why the purple nightshade doesn't suffice to cure the curse. You have to find a way to potentiate the purple nightshade's efficacy. ...
Milos: I once did some research on the question 'How to increase the potency of herbal substances'. If you find my old notes they might help you.

Grimvale Quest

Player: hi
Milos: Oh hello. I hardly noticed you. I'm afraid I am a bit distracted at the moment.
Player: notes
Milos: You discovered my notes! Well done! If you find the recommended ingredients you can brew a potion that might cure the ley line enhanced form of the curse. ...
Milos: But as basic ingredient you need a special kind of nightshade. Not the purple but the crimson one. It is even rarer than the purple nightshade but Maeryn sent me one sample from Grimvale. Here, take it and put it to good use. ...
Milos: In addition, take this ancient inscription. It is a map of some of the known Tibian ley lines. Perhaps it can be of use for you.

Grimvale Quest

Player: hi
Daniel Steelsoul: Greetings and Banor be with you, Player!
Player: potion
Daniel Steelsoul: You did a great job! I really have hope that this potion may cure the infected people here in town. At least I have trust in Master Milos' experience. But there's another problem: Cormaya. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: The curse reached Cormaya, too. Please go there and talk to Yoem.

Grimvale Quest

Cormaya[]

Player: hi
Yoem: Hello Player! Do you need some equipment for your house?
Player: curse
Yoem: Yes, the Curse of the Full Moon has reached Cormaya, too. More and more people are affected but something is really strange: Some of them weren't bitten by were-beasts. So far we thought this is the only way to be infected. ...
Yoem: But now it's obvious that there has to be another way. If you ask me: I guess it's the ground water. Someone has to enter the caverns underneath Cormaya and investigate. ...
Yoem: In the east of the island there are tunnels where we often spot were-beasts at night. Perhaps you should start there.

Grimvale Quest

Player: hi
Yoem: Hello Player! Do you need some equipment for your house?
Player: curse
Yoem: So I was right, it is the ground water! Please try to reverse this contamination. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about magic or arcane matters. But you could ask somebody at the Magic Academy of Edron.

Grimvale Quest

Player: hi
Milos: Oh hello. I hardly noticed you. I'm afraid I am a bit distracted at the moment.
Player: curse
Milos: This is a very interesting discovery! Somehow, the lycanthropes created tainted statues at the terminal points of the three ley lines intersecting underneath Cormaya. But the most powerful point of a ley line is its point of origin. ...
Milos: Thus I assume that there is a second statue at the source of each ley line. Those statues cause the evil that is tainting Cormaya's ground water. You have to travel along the three ley lines to find the source of each one. ...
Milos: Use the map I gave you earlier. It shows the point of origin of each listed ley line. If you reach those points I'm sure you will discover statues there, similar to those in the temple underneath Cormaya. ...
Milos: As it is a curse related to the moon, you will need a sun artefact to reverse it. A holy symbol of Suon should serve this purpose. Here, take mine for this mission.

Yoem: Hello Player! Do you need some equipment for your house?
Player: curse
Yoem: You succeeded! Thank you very much for your help, my friend. Please return to Edron and tell Daniel Steelsoul about it, he will be interested in this outcome, too.

Grimvale Quest

An Ancient Feud[]

Investigate the Hyaena Lairs[]

Player: Lion
Daniel Steelsoul: Lately I heard rumours about the curse. That it has spread to the Darama Desert and that the lions there could also be were-creatures. Do you want to get to the bottom of it?
Player: yes
Daniel Steelsoul: Then please travel to Darashia and search for a man called Domizian. He lives in a house at the harbour. I know him for many years, he's a trustworthy friend. ...
Daniel Steelsoul: I'm sure, he can tell you more about the curse in the Darama Desert.

Grimvale Quest

Player: lion
Domizian: So, Daniel Steelsoul sent you? He is a most respectable man and I'm honoured to know him. It is of advantage that you have already dealt with the were-sickness so you won't hurl yourself into this adventure unprepared. ...
Domizian: Listen, the curse has indeed spread to the Darama Desert - but not recently. It exists here since a long time but only few know about it. Here, it's not werewolves or werebears. The danger that plagues this region are the werehyaenas. ...
Domizian: Until now they were savage and smelly beasts who hunted down a travelling merchant now and then. But mostly they stayed in their subterranean lairs and lived off carrion. ...
Domizian: But a few weeks ago something changed. Suddenly they had shamans, something I never saw before. Those shamans are using bone talismans and paint their fur with runes. Runes I saw just once before ... on an artefact from Drefia. ...
Domizian: I'm afraid the werehyaenas have a kind of pact with the undead of Drefia but I don't have proof. Please go to their lairs and investigate. You will find the entrance north of the town, at a large standing stone. ...
Domizian: Be careful down there, though! Werehyaenas might not be the only danger you will have to face. I heard strange stories about blood pools, a talking skull and even liches.

Grimvale Quest

a Skull: Greetings, traveller!
Player: undead
a Skull: Listen: The undead of Drefia are working together with the werehyaenas. I overheard a secret conversation between the werehyaena leader and a lich right here!
Player: leader
a Skull: A fierce and cunning hyaena named Rhargu. She lives in her own cave down here.

Grimvale Quest

Help Rhargu[]

Player: curse
Rhargu: None of your business, the undead! On the other hand .. they haven't done so much for us. Gave us some talismans for our shamans. But no food! I asked for it. They never brought it. ...
Rhargu: If you bring me the food I wish for, I could end this. Or tell you how to end it. But you have to bring me a boar haunch, those are so tasty! And a hard-boiled hydra egg. Always wanted to try one. ...
Rhargu: Also, take this cask and fill it with salted cave rats. My favourite snack! At last, bring me five lion manes. Want to decorate my cave with them, grhrr. And make sure you can take this cask.

Grimvale Quest

Player: curse
Rhargu: Do you have my food?
Player: yes
Rhargu: Give me! And take this. A special torch, made of sandalwood. Burn down the bone shrine at the dragon skeleton with this torch. That will destroy the connection with the undead. ...
Rhargu: And I have a little reward for you. Take this cask. It's funny but smelly. You can have it.

Grimvale Quest

Destroy the evil site[]

Player: destroy
Domizian: I guess you need something holy or at least blessed to destroy this evil site. The werelions know a ritual that allows you to bless fire in general. It should work with this torch, too. ...
Domizian: But you can do that only at a special altar in our sanctum. Go to the Lion's Rock in the north-west of Darashia. Descend to the area where the most noble lions are guarding a secret entrance. ...
Domizian: There is a door, you can only open if you know the right phrase. It is: 'The sun guides our hearts. The moon guards our dreams'. Down there you will find a room with a mosaic, showing a sun and a moon. ...
Domizian: There is an altar where you can bless the torch. You have to find a lion mane flower and chop the petals up small. Then sprinkle the chopped petals into the flame while standing at the altar. ...
Domizian: Thus, the fire will be blessed and should be able to burn down the evil bone shrine.

Grimvale Quest

Kill Werehyaenas[]

Player: curse
Domizian: You destroyed the pact between the werehyaenas and the undead! You did Darashia a great favour, that's for sure. But there are still so many of them, they could be a real threat to the caravans that try to reach the city. ...
Domizian: Please, kill three hundred of those ferocious werehyaenas and their shamans.

Grimvale Quest

Get pardon for Domizian[]

Player: curse
Domizian: Yes, there are less of them now! What a relief for Darashia. Well, I guess, now I can trust you enough to tell you a little secret about myself. I'm actually a werelion. Don't be scared, though. ...
Domizian: There's something special to the werelions: We can control the curse and don't attack people like mindless beasts. This is the reason why I can live here in the city and talk to you in such a civilized way. ...
Domizian: Well, the werehyaenas were a danger to Darashia but they also caused a very personal problem for me. Look, I assumed that they are up to something and that this something could be the undead in Drefia. ...
Domizian: I warned our king, Heliodor, about it but he didn't believe me. I insisted and got short-tempered - which is never a good idea in the presence of your king. He exiled me as punishment for my impudence. ...
Domizian: This is the reason why I live here in Darashia. This city has its conveniences but I would like to return to my pride. Please find Heliodor and tell him about the werehyaenas' pact with the undead. ...
Domizian: Take this ring, it will allow you to enter the lower part of the sanctum. Wear it while you touch one of the lion columns in the centre of the sanctum's upper floor. Then you will reach the lower part.

Grimvale Quest

Player: curse
Heliodor: Alas, this is a very interesting story you are telling me! Thank you, human, for acquainting me! I will consider to pardon Domizian but I have to take my time to think it through. ...
Heliodor: But now, please leave this place. You did us a certain favour but for all that, humans are not welcome here.

Grimvale Quest

Player: curse
Domizian: You found Heliodor and told him about the werehyaenas? He will consider to pardon me? I don't know how I could thank you! Take this as a small compensation for your efforts!
