Thais Chess Board

Thais Chess Board

Chess is an intellectual game for 2 players that can be played in the Game Rooms in Carlin, Edron, Kazordoon, Thais, and Yalahar. Every Game Room has a regular set of pieces, but players can collect a luxury Zaoan Chess Set through The Colours of Magic and play with those instead.

Goal
The goal of the game is to capture your opponent's King. All other lost tokens are merely casualties. The game is not won until the King is captured.
Setup
The game board is arranged as follows. Note that the Queen is always on her own color square. A regulation board will have a White square in your lower-right corner, indicating that Chess boards in Tibia are to be played horizontally (white on the left, black on the right):
White Castle Token White Knight Token White Bishop Token White King Token White Queen Token White Bishop Token White Knight Token White Castle Token
White Pawn Token White Pawn Token White Pawn Token White Pawn Token White Pawn Token White Pawn Token White Pawn Token White Pawn Token

Black Pawn Token Black Pawn Token Black Pawn Token Black Pawn Token Black Pawn Token Black Pawn Token Black Pawn Token Black Pawn Token
Black Castle Token Black Knight Token Black Bishop Token Black King Token Black Queen Token Black Bishop Token Black Knight Token Black Castle Token

Playing
Each different kind of game token has different rules that govern how it is allowed to move. Note that no kind of token is able to move through another, except for Knights. By moving one of your tokens onto a space where an opponent's token is, you have captured the opponent's token, meaning it is removed from the game board.
  • Black Pawn Token White Pawn Token Jade Zaoan Pawn Obsidian Zaoan Pawn Pawns can only move forward one space, but can only capture a game token by moving diagonally forward one space. Pawns are the only pieces that cannot move backwards. On the first move a pawn makes in the game, it is allowed to move 2 squares forward instead of one (see Wikipedia:Pawn (chess) for more info and better explanation).

  • Black Castle Token White Castle Token Jade Zaoan Rook Obsidian Zaoan Rook Castles (Rooks) can move any number of squares in a straight vertical or horizontal line.

  • Black Knight Token White Knight Token Jade Zaoan Knight Obsidian Zaoan Knight Knights must make two steps when moving. One step must be 2 squares either left, right, forward, or backward, and the other step must be 1 square (may be taken in any order). Also, the second step must be perpendicular to the first (e.g. it the first step in 2 spaces to the right, the second can either be 1 space forward or 1 space backward). The Knight is the only chess piece that can jump over other pieces (see Wikipedia:Knight_(chess) for more info and better explanation).

  • Black Bishop Token White Bishop Token Jade Zaoan Bishop Obsidian Zaoan Bishop Bishops can move any number of squares diagonally.

  • Black Queen Token White Queen Token Jade Zaoan Queen Obsidian Zaoan Queen Queens can move any number of squares in any straight line (up/down, left/right and diagonally)

  • Black King Token White King Token Jade Zaoan King Obsidian Zaoan King Kings can move one square in any direction.

If a player's king is in a position where they can be captured in the next turn, their king is in "Check", meaning he is in danger. You cannot make a move that would place your own king in "check", and if your king is in check, you must make a move that will cause it to no longer be in check.
Outcome
Gameplay continues until one of the following occur:
  1. A player is in check and cannot perform a move to secure the King. This is called checkmate and results in a win for the team capturing the King.
  2. A player cannot perform any move because either they are blocked (e.g. Pawn roadblock) or performing the move would result in a check on their King. This results in a stalemate which means no player wins.
  3. No pieces are taken for a certain amount of turns, which can be negotiated by the players. This is to resolve e.g. the issue of having no pieces besides the King whereby the Kings cannot capture each other or force a stalemate. This results in a draw.
  4. A player forfeits.
