Fields last from 20 seconds to a few minutes depending on the type of rune.
Depending on their resistances, creatures will either try to avoid the fields or ignore them. This can make them very useful when hunting as only the ones you have dealt direct damage to or have targeted will cross the fields in order to attack you with melee, allowing you to focus on one creature at a time or increase the distance between you and it. Just beware that many creatures can also get rid of the fields by throwing down one of their owns.
