These are commands you can use to chat with other characters. Best used with hotkeys that are meant to be said in the Default Channel or to a specific character.
Local Channel Commands
Say: #s <message>
Only players on the Game Window can read your message.
Yell: #y <message>
Only characters on the Game Window and characters nearby off the Game Window can read your message. The yell will cover a square area of 30 tiles in all directions. Above surface, characters on all floors can hear the yell. Underground, only characters on the same floor hear the yell. Yells will be displayed in capital font.
Whisper: #w <message>
Only people that stand 1 SQM away from you can hear you. People around it will hear "pspsp".
Private Chat Channel Commands
Invite Character: #i <charactername>
The character specified will be invited to your private chat channel.
Exclude Character: #x <charactername>
The character specified will be excluded from your private chat channel.
Any Channel Command
Private Message: *charactername* <message>
This is another way to contact players directly.
There is also a way to send out one message at a time: @charactername@ <message>.
This will send the message, and then clear the @...@ from your console.
If the player you're messaging has a long name you can put a tilde in front of a part of his name. I'm going to message Fred of Secura, it might look something like this: *Fred o~* Hey Fred!
Back in the days you used to be able to have a private message channel with yourself but CIP removed that, you can still message yourself by using direct message. If my name's Albert and I'm going to message myself it might look like this: *Alber~* Hey me
